The Industry Accelerates Towards the 45GW Target!
The UK solar industry has just reached a monumental milestone, demonstrating that the energy transition is accelerating at a rapid pace. According to recent figures, the nation’s total installed solar capacity has officially surpassed 20GW!
This achievement, reached in late 2025, is a powerful testament to the hard work of every installer, designer, and developer in the UK. We celebrate this landmark as a critical step toward energy independence and a net-zero future.
The Scale of the Surge
The growth figures tell an impressive story of momentum:
• The UK added an exceptional 1.4GW of solar capacity in the first three quarters of 2025 alone.
• The total capacity grew by at least 1.9 GW in the preceding 12 months, representing a robust increase of 10.7%.
This surge in deployment highlights not only the increasing economic viability of solar but also the strengthening policy support, driven in part by the successful rollout of the government’s Contract for Difference (CfD) scheme. We’ve seen major projects, including the 373MW Cleve Hill solar farm (now the UK’s largest), switch on and contribute significantly to this landmark number.
While major projects grab the headlines, the foundations of the 20GW milestone remain firmly rooted in decentralised generation—the work you, our partners, perform every day.
• Residential Power: Domestic installations still make up the lion’s share of PV sites across the country.
• Utility’s Rise: However, utility-scale and standalone ground-mounted installations now account for at least 40% of the total capacity, with over 520 MW of new capacity coming from plants of 5MW or greater in the first three quarters of 2025 alone.
This vibrant mix confirms that solar is a mature, two-pronged industry capable of delivering secure, clean power from rooftops and fields across the nation. As we celebrate 20GW, we must look ahead to the next ambitious goal: the UK government’s target of reaching at least 45GW of deployed solar capacity by the end of 2030.
This is an enormous challenge, but one that presents unprecedented opportunity for every business in the supply chain. Reaching 45GW will require continued robust procurement, especially through future CfD allocation rounds (AR7 and AR8), and relentless growth in the domestic and commercial sectors.
