The government calls for evidence to support a Smart Data scheme in the energy sector.
With a closing date of 10th March, the government has released a call for evidence on the potential for developing a Smart Data scheme in the energy sector.
The Smart Data Scheme is intended to “…give customers control over the use of their own data, so they can access useful, innovative and personalised products and services from third party providers that cater to their needs.” – Developing an energy smart data scheme – GOV.UK
The paper is of particular interest to energy sector participants like energy suppliers, network and transmission operators, consumer groups, trade bodies, and industry groups.
Benefits could help consumers to find the best tariff based on actual consumption by Smart Data sharing – with their permission, while energy consumption insights, electric vehicle (EV) charging flexibility, home retrofitting, and carbon reporting are other paybacks.
One area where Smart Data sharing has worked successfully is the banking industry giving customers 24/7 access to their own data, as well as new products and services. It has driven huge innovation and economic growth in the banking sector.
The government believe the digitalised exchange of data will underpin the modern energy system and is crucial to the delivery of a zero-carbon electricity system by 2030. What do you think?
